Ammonium recovery from biocatalytic calcification reactor effluent by struvite precipitation

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Chemical precipitation is a suitable method for the recovery and removal of ammonium in water and a fertilizer known as MAP (magnesium ammonium phosphate; MgNH4PO4.6H2O; struvite) is obtained. Additionally, the advantage of this method is that environmental conditions do not have any effect compared to biological methods. In this study, the recovery of ammonium (Cmean=348 mg NH4 /L ± 38.1; n=25) occurred after the hydrolysis of urea in the biocatalytic calcification reactor (BCR) effluent and it precipitated as struvite. The effects of operating parameters, such as different phosphate and magnesium sources, Mg:NH4:PO4 molar ratio, pH value, mixing speed-time, and fertilizer effect, were examined. The precipitates were characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron micrograph. The optimum molar ratio of Mg:NH4:PO4 was determined as 1.25:1:1. Studies using different pH ranges (7–10) and this molar ratio showed that the ammonium recovery of approximately 96% was reached at a pH value of 9.36. It was seen that the rapid mixing (200 rpm) of 30-s period and the slow mixing (30 rpm) of 2-min period were sufficient for MAP precipitation. Struvite that was obtained after precipitation was used as a fertilizer and it was observed to have a positive effect on plant growth.

Struvite precipitation potential for nutrient recovery from anaerobically treated wastes.

Geochemical equilibrium speciation modeling was used to determine optimum conditions for precipitation of magnesium ammonium phosphate, or struvite, for the recovery of nutrients from anaerobically digested wastes. Despite a wide range of pH values with the potential to precipitate struvite, the optimum pH was determined to be 9.0. Bench experiments conducted on effluent from an anaerobic seque...

Anaerobic digestion of dairy manure with enhanced ammonia removal.

Poor ammonia-nitrogen removal in methanogenic anaerobic reactors digesting animal manure has been reported as an important disadvantage of anaerobic digestion (AD) in several studies. Development of anaerobic processes that are capable of producing reduced ammonia-nitrogen levels in their effluent is one of the areas where further research must be pursued if AD technology is to be made more eff...

Phosphorus Removal and Recovery from Swine Waste: Results of Pretreatment with an Anaerobic Sequencing Batch Reactor

An approach is presented for the on-site treatment of diluted swine waste. The approach (1) incorporates anaerobic digestion with an anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (ASBR) to stabilize waste, reduce odor, and reduce solids and organic compounds, while producing biogas; (2) increases the ortho-phosphate concentration of the anaerobic digester effluent by enhanced biological phosphorus removal...

Development of a Bench-Scale Air Sparged Continuous Flow Reactor for Struvite Precipitation from Two Different Liquid Swine Manure Storage Systems

Forced precipitation of struvite (MgNH4PO4 . 6H2O) can reduce dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP) in swine manure slurries. Optimization of this process requires that the swine manure slurry pH be increased, that magnesium be added, and that sufficient reaction time be allowed for struvite precipitation. To gather data that could be used for a full-scale continuous-flow struvite precipitation r...

Struvite precipitation for ammonia nitrogen removal in 7-aminocephalosporanic acid wastewater.

7-Aminocephalosporanic acid wastewater usually contains high concentrations of ammonium (NH₄⁺-N), which is known to inhibit nitrification during biological treatment processes. Chemical precipitation is a useful technology to remove ammonium from wastewater. In this paper, the removal of ammonium from 7-aminocephalosporanic acid wastewater was studied. The optimum pH, molar ratio, and various c...
